Transcendence

Birute Brandt

Birute Brandt explores the tension between the constructed self and the essential self the persona we present versus the inner forces that shape us. Her elongated, often androgynous figures inhabit the threshold between reality and the surreal, suspended in minimal, dreamlike spaces. Faceless and half human, they invite viewers to engage directly, forming personal interpretations. Through aesthetic surrealism, Brandt investigates the dual dimensions of human existence: the horizontal plane of identity, desire, and social presence, and the vertical pull toward introspection and transcendence. Her work captures the delicate balance between performance and authenticity, control and surrender, visibility and silence, revealing quiet psychological landscapes where opposing forces converge.

During this exhibition, Brandt undertakes an artist residency in the gallery, creating works on-site that bring her vision into dialogue with the space and its audience. Working primarily in acrylic and watercolor, she transforms her reflections on human consciousness into visually striking and conceptually profound artworks, offering a unique, immersive encounter for visitors.
